ISST advanced schema therapist certification

When you’re looking for help, choosing the right therapy approach - and the right practitioner – matters.

Schema therapy is rapidly gaining traction in Scotland, which is incredibly positive news. Because it can be so effective, many skilled practitioners (such as CBT therapists) are now integrating schema-informed tools and interventions into their existing practice.

That said, there’s a distinct difference between a therapist who uses schema interventions alongside other modalities in their work, and someone who is fully certified by the International Society of Schema Therapy (ISST) to deliver the complete model at depth.

As one of very few Advanced Certified Schema Therapists in the Glasgow area, I want to share:

-          what this standard means

-          why the training pathway is so rigorous

-          and how it protects and benefits you as a client

What is ISST certification?

The International Society of Schema Therapy (ISST) is the global governing body for the model. It sets strict international benchmarks for training, specialised supervision and clinical competency.

The ISST offer two levels of accredited certification: standard and advanced.

Achieving Advanced Certification is a years-long process of intensive training, supervised practice and evaluation. It’s explicitly designed to ensure a therapist has the comprehensive competency required to work with deeply ingrained relational patterns, complex personality structures, and profound emotional distress.

Training versus certification

It’s worth noting a distinction that can sometimes confuse prospective clients. A therapist may attend advanced CPD (continuous professional development) workshops in schema therapy - even those delivered by accredited ISST trainers - without being on the ISST certification route.

While these standalone courses are excellent for expanding a clinician's knowledge,  they are fundamentally different from the formal ISST certification curriculum. Attending a workshop does not include the years of intensive, case-by-case specialist supervision or the rigorous, independent session rating and auditing required to hold an official ISST credential.

Only those who have undertaken the formal ISST certificate curriculum and successfully completed can claim “I am an ISST certified standard / advanced schema therapist”. You can therefore look out for this specific term on a website or profile.

To achieve my own ISST advanced credential, my training pathway involved:

  • Expert specialised training: Completing extensive training modules from an ISST-approved advanced trainer and supervisor. In-person training days focused on advanced teaching and theory plus live, observed skills practice.

  • Rigorous supervised clinical practice: Treating a dedicated cohort of very complex cases for 2-3 years under weekly, specialised supervision from an ISST-approved trainer and supervisor.

  • Independent quality audits: Submitting full-length recordings of real therapy sessions (with full client consent), alongside detailed case conceptualisations. These were independently reviewed and rated by external examiners along multiple benchmark criteria to ensure high levels of emotional attunement and precise application of change techniques like imagery rescripting and chair work. Advanced certification requires consistently high scores across all 11 core dimensions of the official ISST competency rating scale.

  • Proven competency in complexity: advanced certification means demonstrating skilfulness and confidence working with complex and long-standing emotional, interpersonal and/or personality-level difficulties.

What this means for your therapy

Schema therapy is a profound experiential and relational model. It’s designed to heal deep-rooted emotional blueprints and modify long-standing behavioural patterns.

When you work with an Advanced certified schema therapist, you are securing a specific, internationally regulated standard of care:

  • The complete schema model:  I’m trained to provide the full schema model as a unified framework i.e. how it was designed and intended to be used. Rather than applying isolated tools or techniques, I am qualified to tailor the entire schema model to the depth and complexity of your unique experiences, history and needs.

  • Safety in deep emotional work: advanced training ensures that powerful experiential techniques such as imagery and chair work (the core engines of change in schema therapy) are structured, paced and targeted to your specific needs and held within your emotional limits.

  • Specialised supervision: My ongoing clinical supervision (a requirement for every HCPC-registered psychologist) is conducted exclusively with ISST-certified advanced-level schema supervisors. This ensures my practice remains at the highest standard.

  • Years of grounded experience: I have applied the schema model at advanced level since 2012 across several NHS primary and secondary care services and in my private practice. Whilst I am trained in multiple psychological therapies, schema therapy remains my core specialist framework due to its profound capacity for lasting change.

Questions you can ask a schema therapist before you book in

Because "schema therapy" is becoming highly sought-after, it’s frequently advertised and marketed both in the Glasgow area and around the UK. Many professionals now offer “schema therapy” or practice as “schema therapists”. Some describe themselves as “schema-informed” or have undertaken “schema training”. This wider availability is a positive thing overall for mental health care in Scotland.

However, the full schema model is intricate and difficult to master. Beyond technical knowledge, it relies heavily on the therapist’s deep emotional attunement and active, reparenting presence. It is a very distinct way of being with someone who is in emotional pain.

So, if you’re speaking with a practitioner offering “schema therapy”, it’s entirely appropriate to ask about their training background in the model to make sure it aligns with the depth of support you need and deserve.

You might consider asking:

  1. Are you “schema-informed”, or are you certified with the International Society of Schema Therapy (ISST) at either Standard or Advanced level?

  2. Is your current clinical supervisor an ISST-certified advanced schema therapist and supervisor?

  3. Are you currently an active member of the ISST? Can I find you listed using the ISST 'Find A Therapist' search function?

You can verify whether a therapist is currently an active ISST member and holds an active certification by using the 'Find A Therapist' search function on the ISST website, here. The directory only includes therapists whose ISST membership is currently active.

Empowering your choice

Your therapy is a significant investment of your time, financial resources, vulnerability and hope.

Because of this, you deserve full transparency regarding your therapist’s qualifications and experience in schema therapy. This means you can ensure they match the depth of the inner work you wish to undertake. You can therefore give truly informed consent for the work.

Not everyone needs deep-level, long-term schema therapy. Drawing on schema elements to supplement another therapy such as CBT or EMDR can be highly beneficial for many clients.

However, chronic, deep-seated, traumatic or treatment-resistant life patterns may require the complete, structured model delivered by a specialist.

Transparency and informed consent allow you to distinguish between the two and make the right choice for your own care.

I am listed on the official, public ISST directory. If you would like to discuss how an advanced-certified schema therapist could help you break free from lifelong patterns, please reach out to me – I’d love to hear from you.
